The TI-89 and the TI-Nspire CAS are two of the most well-known graphing calculators that are equipped with the CAS (computer algebra system). The TI-89 calculator has been in the market for some time now, with the Titanium Edition being the newest version. Considering that it has been around for a number of years, there are several apps and programs available for the calculator. It has a drop-down menu that makes it easy to use and intuitive. Apparently, this calculator is quite popular as the menu system found on the TI-Nspire has several features in sync with it.
The TI-Nspire had been available to consumers for a mere few years prior to early 2011 when an announcement for the TI-Nspire CAS was made. The CX is the TI-Nspire CAS’s color version. Like all TI-Nspire CAS’s versions, its command structure and menu system borrows a lot from the TI-89. However, the TI-Nspire has many merits over the TI-89, particularly with graphing and inputting expressions. In the case of inputting expressions, it has templates for integrals, summations as well as just about anything a student can encounter in calculus.
A major shortcoming of the TI-89 is that it does not have mathprint’ inputting, also referred to as pretty print. A student can set up the calculator in a way that when he/she presses enter’, their work is reformatted to appear as is seen in the book. This may not be a big deal for a student studying radicals or exponents. However, there will be a problem when studying integrals and summations.

The bottom line is that the TI-Nspire CAS is recommendable. It has all the newest whistles and bells, as well as much better displays. Also, it is easier to use when compared to the TI-89.
